Typical Puppy Care and Kitten Care

We recommend starting vaccinations for puppies and kittens when they are between six and eight weeks old. First visits for puppies will usually include distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, parainfluenza (DHPP), fecal check, flea and tick prevention, and heartworm or dewormer during the first exam. While kittens will receive feline viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, panleukopenia (FVRCP), fecal check, and flea and tick prevention.

Second, third, and fourth visits usually occur three to four weeks after each visit. A rabies shot providing one year of protection, also known as RV1, needs to be updated every year before a puppy or kitten can receive a three-year rabies shot. Puppies also have to undergo a 4DX Heartworm test when they are six months of age.

Another aspect of puppy and kitten care involves spaying or neutering the pet at five to six months, and this can also be the best time to have your pet microchipped. Microchipping your pet is important because millions of pets go missing every year. While microchipping does not guarantee a speedy reunion with your furry friend, it does improve the odds significantly. Exact statistics vary, but microchipped pets are as much as 50% more likely to be returned to their owners versus those without microchips.

In addition to all of these internal forms of puppy care and kitten care, it is also important for pet owners to consider the basic external needs for their pets. For example, sturdy pet carriers are highly recommended so you can transport your puppy or kitten to and from the veterinarian. Make sure all collars, bedding, and water or food dishes are appropriately sized for your puppy or kitten. You should also be sure that the toys you buy for your pet are safe for smaller animals. We will help ensure that all of your basic pet care needs are satisfied.
